Creative Vintage Christmas Decorations

Hopefully the following will get you into the holiday mood. I admit that I have not really had the time to absorb that it's nearly that time of year again; I've had a couple of busy months and a busy year. While my body does not seem to have really absorbed the fact that it is almost December 25th, I have been forcing myself to listen to some Christmas music and look at other ways to get into the spirit. The following images and posts have helped.

I have never seen or imagined felt toadstools on a Christmas tree, but I think that these would really look good. They are so cute.

Instead of a typical chocolate advent calendar, you can now stuff your own with your favourite items and hang it. I love that this is a banner. It's a great new idea.

Happy Halloween! Painted Pumpkins and Pumpkin Art

I just wanted to wish a Happy Halloween to all of my visitors. (This is my favourite holiday, as it falls just after my favourite time of the year; autumn colours and the last of the warm summery days, known as Indian Summer.) I love the colours; russet and yellow and orange and brown. I like pumpkins, cinnamon, and 'Indian corn' and gourds.

I thought that I would include a special creative post about pumpkins. Besides making jack 'o lanterns and carving intricate designs, pumpkins can be used to create other decorations, and I have added a few ideas below.

Painted Pumpkins

Samsung Galaxy S II - New Gadget

A couple of weeks ago, I could not wait any longer to own my very own smart phone, although this means being tied into a contract for two years. I am a late adopter of owning my own smart phone, though I often use them while testing websites.

I simply prefer to get complete use out of my gadgets and use them until the end of their days. Technology is always changing, and keeping up with the changes is costly and, in my opinion, bad for the environment. It costs energy to make technology, and bits of unwanted phones simply go into landfills a couple of years after they are considered out-of-date. I also know of many who get into debt through adopting the new technologies as soon as they come out, such as anything from a new car every three years to a new phone or new camera every couple of years. Society tends to make people judge their self-worth through material items. My last two mobiles were on their last days before I decided that it was best to replace them; it's normally always the battery that tends to go first, apart from scratches and paint/plastic rubbing off and touchy keypads.

However, this post is not meant to be about keeping green, personal finances, or materialism. It's about my new phone. I decided to get the Samsung Galaxy SII, and I opted for the white version of the model. My first impressions are quite good, though I have heard that the battery does not last very long, but a new battery (that lasts longer) can be purchased. The phone is thin and light, and it's easy to use. Usability-wise, it is similar to the iPhone.

I'm in the process of installing applications on the new phone and playing with the new features. So far, the battery has not drained too much, but I probably will invest in a new battery that lasts longer, and I can always keep this battery charged in case I need a back-up. (This is what I do when I use my digital SLR camera. I have a battery in the camera, and I have a charged back-up batery on hand for replacement.)

The Samsung Galaxy SII also looks like it was a perfect choice of phone as it was just announced to be the winner of the T3 Gadgets "Phone of the Year" award, beating the iPhone, which I am glad I did not wait for in the end (I originally had my heart set on the 'iPhone 5', before the announcements were made last week for the release of the new iPhone).

Wow! Gorillas Putting Smiles on Faces in London

On Friday last week, the "Wow! Gorillas" sculptures, which I first became acquainted with in Bristol last month (Wow! Gorillas in Bristol), were on display near Tower Bridge. During my lunch break on Friday, I took a walk across the river to have a look and get a few photographs. Upon seeing each one, I remembered where I saw it in Bristol, and they brought back so many memories of that weekend and the people who admired them.

In short, Wow! Gorillas is a charity event that aims to provide funding for gorilla conservation. The event brings community, business, and the arts together. The gorillas were painted by artists in Bristol. Similar large animal sculptures were seen in London and Bath last year. (I blogged about these here: Spot the Lions in Bath and Parading Artistic Elephants in London.)

The gorilla sculptures were only in London for a few days, and at mid-day, many tourists and workers on their lunch break swarmed to get photographs. (The riverside walk is always popular over lunch with many City workers getting a breath of fresh air, exercise, and with tourists visiting Tower Bridge). In my short time there (twenty minutes), I saw many smiles and photographs being taken of the sculptures. One of the sculptures was being painted; on the partially-white-gorilla-canvas, a portrait of a gorilla beginning to take shape. The artist, Nicole Antrobus, specialises in painting wildlife; her website can be found here: http://www.wildlifeartistlondon.co.uk.

While admiring the artwork, I also witnessed a City worker phoning his young son (presumably), with a 'surprise' photo of the Spiderman-inspired gorilla. I heard others talk about the elephants in London last year and the pigs in Bath a few years ago; sadly, the pigs arrived the year I left Bath, and I had no knowledge of them. It is good to see these works of art educate others on gorilla conservation issues and bring a smile and ignite a memory in so many.

Wow! Gorillas in Bristol

Wow! Gorillas is an outdoor art event featuring over sixty painted gorilla sculptures throughout Bristol. The gorillas have been placed in Bristol for the summer, and their last day will be on September 6th. (After September 6th, they will all be shown on display in Bristol Zoo.) In short, Wow! Gorillas is a charity event, and it has been brought together to celebrate the 175th anniversary of the Bristol Zoo. Wow! Gorillas aims to provide funding for gorilla conservation (and education about gorillas) and to raise funds for a local Bristol charity. The event brings community, business, and the arts together. The gorillas have been painted by local artists.

Last year, London hosted a similar event for elephant conservation, and Bath sponsored a lion conservation event with near life-size sculptures of the animals around the respective cities. (I blogged about these here: Spot the Lions in Bath and Parading Artistic Elephants in London.)

I visited the gorillas in Bristol at the weekend. Fortunately, the weather was warm and sunny, despite a couple of quick downpours; however, cupcakes were devoured during this time at a lovely cupcake shop near the cathedral. Many other families, groups, and couples had the same plan to go gorilla-spotting. Some cycled, and others walked, and many drove to the ones further afield; it was a great way to see the city and to get some exercise. Both children and adults were drawn to the painted gorillas, and locating them was addictive. Also, strangers were quite chatty with others on the same mission.

As an artist, I appreciate art bringing the community together and educating and supporting a good cause. With so many others visiting the gorillas, it really does show that the community are interested in the arts. I was also glad to see that many of the sculptures were not badly damaged; some had been written on or chipped, but overall, they seem to be mainly unharmed.

In addition to bringing the community together, technology has also been brought together to make the gorilla-searching even more enjoyable. A mobile application can be downloaded to track the gorillas via GPS technology and to allow the user to mark them off the list when the gorilla is discovered. A photograph can also be taken with the device, which will upload the image with the information about the specific gorilla. The gorillas can only be marked as discovered in the application when the mobile is within a certain distance so that users do not 'cheat'. The ability to follow the gorilla trail on a GPS application made the process easier and more enjoyable, with the ability to plot which gorillas still need to be found on the application's map.

Last year, the Bath lions used a mobile application, but it was not nearly as advanced and it only plotted the images of the lions on a map without GPS based on the user's location, so this is definitely a step up and nearly everyone was using a mobile device to photograph the gorilla.

A few photographs of Wow! Gorillas are below, and more information about them can be read at: http://www.bristolzoo.org.uk/wow-gorillas

Classic Tractor Show

Summer is the time when classic cars and tractors leave the barns, sheds, and garages to go onto display for others to enjoy and for their owners to mingle with like-minded enthusiasts.

A classic tractor show was held at the Coshocton County fairgrounds on the 9th of July, not far from where the Saturday farmer's market is held every week. I enjoyed seeing these brightly-painted and loved-by-their-owners antique tractors. These owners would have spent significant time re-working these machines, considering that these machines and would have been used so often and worked on by farmers, who would not have kept them in any sort of mint condition. These machines would have been riddled with rust and dents through so many years of hard work.

Leeds Junction Art Project

The city of Leeds has commissioned artists to use the junction power box as a canvas to create paintings in the city in order to create art appreciation in the community. There are currently ten painted boxes to find. Normally, thousands of people will walk by a junction power box and not notice.

The Junction art project reminded me of seeing painted fire hydrants in my home town (Dresden, Ohio) when I was younger. The fire hydrants were painted with faces, and they were all unique. Sadly, these fire hydrants were painted over (with a solid coat of paint) probably about twenty years ago.

Here are a few photographs of the junction box art; these are from the second link below, and more can be viewed on that website.

Creative 'Save The Date' Cards, 1

I created my 'Save the Date' cards for my upcoming wedding a little while ago; unfortunately, it was a rushed job which consisted of a photograph and standard font printed on postcards with some red, white, and blue stars. (I do not have a Fourth of July theme, but the wedding will be taking place in the summer.)

Due to other commitments and life in general, I didn't have a lot of time to design something perfect and get it sent out by my deadline. Irregardless, my family and friends were complimentary about them. (The perfectionist in me was far more critical.)

I have recently come across some inspirational designs for 'Save the Date' cards that I wish I had discovered a few months ago, when I quickly put my 'Save the Date' postcards together. I really love these, and a lot of them are so simple, yet convey so much emotion.

To add to this topic, singer Lily Allen's 'Save the Date' cards for her June 11th wedding were leaked to the press, and the postcard conveys a country theme with her and her husband-to-be's heads superimposed on an old photograph.

My regret: Not having enough time or inspirtation for my 'Save the Date' cards. However, I have posted some inspiration for these below.
