Sr. X Street Art at Southwark

Street artist Sr. X from Spain has painted many walls across London. The style of his work is inspired by vintage illustrations and advetising. I recently came across one of his murals that I had not seen before in Southwark, and it is located on a wall and advertises Old Union Yard next to a pub and over an archway.

Typography Street Art by Lilly Lou and Candie

This post features typography street art by Lilly Lou and Candie that I photographed many years ago when I used to work in east London, and these murals date from around 2015. Lilly Lou painted in London with influence on typography. The street art was painted in the spring on an orange backfround "No good reason".

Street artist Candie also paints in a typography style. The artist has also painted type and grafitti across the world.

February Travel to Vienna, Austria

At the end of February, I visited Vienna in Austria. The city has been on my "to visit" list for at least twenty years, but I particularly wanted to see it in the summer months. However, I opted to visit now as my cousin is currently staying there. He has been before for several months, but it was a pandemic and the aftermath of that, so I only now just got to go. Vienna itself is a large city with many museums and music halls, and it is also a working town. The city is more spread out over a large area, so I really did tire my feet out. Keep reading below to see what I got up to on my February visit of Vienna.

I stayed at the Grand Imperial Hotel [LINK]. I also visited a couple of museums and churchs. I visited St. Michael's church, St. Stephen's Cathedral, the Art History Museum, Vienna Succession Museum to see Klimt's artwork, One of the most memorable attractions is Schoenbrunn Palace and the gardens and Schoenbrunn Zoo. I saw a concert and opera, "Orpheus in the Underworld".

kunsthistorisches-wein1.jpg

Next up in my list is what I had to eat and drink in Vienna. Vienna has several chocolate shops. I really liked the gelato / ice cream that I had at Ferrari Gelato. Yes, it was February, but I wanted some ice cream and treated myself on the first day. They do pizza here, too. The selection was very small with a lot of missing flavours due to the time of the year it was, but I managed to get my favourite pistachio and the chocolate was also very good.

There are many chocolate shops in Vienna, and they have the speciality chocolate "Mozart" which is a chocolate and marzipan sweet and a picture of the musician. Laderach chocolates were the favourite that I tried. They also have Lindt, which I am not a fan, selling all sorts of different flavours of their famous truffles, and Manner, which is a wafer. I bought some coconut wafers.

I also visited Cafe Konditorei Heiner and had some dubai chocolate bar here, and it was very good. I also had a decent hot chocolate.

Another place that I visited that is popular for their cakes and desserts is Gerstner's cafe. I had lunch here and saved room for a cherry tart. They also have apple tart, which comes with custard. But the cherry did not, and it was too sour to have without custard or ice cream. Also, I bit into three cherry seeds, which isn't good. So, I don't recommend this place, no matter how nice the items look. The decor is also amazing with mirrors and lavish decorations, oak paneling, and ceiling/wall paintings.

The canal is a pleasant walk with street art, but I did not walk too far down it.

vienna-february

I found little shopping galleries and a lot of unexpected churches and alleys.

I also found the Roman site, which is a UNESCO heritage site. This is escavated and is the fort of Vindobona. These were apartment buildings and gardens here at the site of a fort.

More than anything, the level of detail in the architecture was stunning across Vienna.

The below park (People's Park or Volksgarten) looks pleasant enough, but I think it would be nicer in the spring and summer.

vienna-february

The clock tower is located next to the park, and during winter, the grounds outside are set up with a wonderful-looking intricate ice skating rink with ramps and bridges to different parts to skate in. It looked really fun, but I cannot skate.

Votive Church was lit up in pink.

I also had a wander to Nashmarkt with my cousin on Saturday morning. They have fruit and vegetables, cheese, sweets, spices, meats, and so many items for sale. A little bit beyond this is a huge area which is set up with antiques and vintage or second hand items for sale, like a huge fleamarket/car boot sale/gargage sale.

Along the market main road, my cousin told me to look at the detail of the buildings. All of the buildings were beautifully-decorated, and there was a plan to continue them all the way to Schoenbrunn Palace.

I enjoyed wandering around to get my feeling for the city. I do hope to return in the summer to spend some more time here and enjoy it.

Street Art in Vienna

When I was in Vienna in February, I discoverd some street art across the city. The majority of the street art is located around the canal and also in the location just west of the main centre. I had a walk to locate some of the street art from artists that I recognised who painted in London. This post covers all of the street art that I discovered and other random artwork.

Street Art by HNRX and Millo in Vienna

When I was visiting Vienna in February, I discovered a couple of murals side by side next to a playground outside the centre of the city. The artwork features the work of two artists - Millo and HNRX. Both artists have painted in London, so their work was instantly recognisable to me.

millo-hnrx-vienna.jpg

HNRX creates street art that is in a "comic surreal" style, and many of his pieces feature food items combined and matched into surreal items. In this work, it shows a deconstructed sandwich with the ingredients located on the wall above each other.

hnrx-vienna1.jpg

hnrx-vienna2.jpg

Millo is an Italian artist who creates illustrations in a black and white style with his character being a part of the work, and he usually creates cityscapes or geometrical patterns. His work reminds me of comics or graphic novels. The work usually incorporates the design of the building. In the work, the character is shown with a backdrop of the cityscape holding onto a corner and appearing to fly.

Visiting St. Michael's Church in Vienna

St. Michael's Church in Vienna is one of the oldest in the city, and it dates from the mid-1200. It is built in the Romanesque style and next to the imperial court buildings. The church has death masks of Mozart on the entrance, and this is where his unfinished music was played upon his death. The funeral service was held here. There are some old wall paintings here that look medieval in style. The church is free to visit.

When I was in Vienna, Austria at the end of February, I had a visit on a damp Sunday morning to the Art History Museum (Kunsthistorisches). The museum is impressive in architecture with beautiful detail, marble floors, and archways. The museum has a huge collection of paintings, statues, and other items from throughout history. There is the gallery of paintings, Romans and Greek art and sculptures, Egyptian art and jewellery and statues and mummies, metalwork, ceramics, and much more. The museum also hosts the most picturesque setting for a cafe, and this in itself had a long queue.

Possible Banksy in Vienna

When I was in Vienna at the end of February, I discovered some street art in the Museum Quarter that reminded me of some of Banksy's most recent work in London. In London last summer, Banksy went on a spree of painting various animals across walls and buildings in London. The street art is located next to a footbridge that has been tiled by Space Invader. The artwork features three gorillas appearing to hang from the limbs of trees. When the trees are in foilage, these gorilla silhouettes may not be visible, but they are a part of the artwork. Now, I am not sure if they are by Banksy as I could not find anything out about them, but they do match the silhouette style of some of the artist's work last summr in London. There's not much stenciling design on the work, but there wasn't in some of his work last summer as well, possibly because in some locations, he had to rush.

Last summer, the wall outside of Zetland House in Shoreditch was re-painted by street artist Lily Mixe. Lily Mixe is known for painting illustrated designs with patterns inspired by floral designs, nature, and the animal kingdom. The pattern painted onto Zetland House is of a series of spotted gold and black toads on a blue background.

David Shillinglaw Street Art in Vienna

When I was in Vienna in February, I came across street art by British street artist David Shillinglaw. The street art is at "Dirty Paradise" along the canal in Vienna, which was not open when I visited but which may be a summer bar and entertainment area. David Shillinglaw's artwork is inspired by tribal, abstract, and pop art and uses bright colours and an illustrative style. Painted in 2016, the artwork looks pretty good considering that it is nearly ten years old.
